Frequently Asked Questions
Q I’ve received a leaflet about the Street lighting replacement work.  What happens next?
A You will receive a notification letter in the next few months advising when Balfour Beatty will be working in your area.
Q What does the work involve?
A It will involve the installation of new columns, electricity supply cables and then the removal of the old columns.
Q Will the new columns be in the same position as the old columns?
A Yes in some cases, but many of the new columns will be in different positions. This is because the current standards require a minimum light level and a consistency of illumination, which may not be achievable without changing the position and spacing of the lighting columns.  Additional lighting may be required for safety at road junctions.
Q How can I find out where the new columns will be located?
A Plans will be available at the Balfour Beatty Office after you receive your notification letter, address overleaf, and also at some local centres, the details of which can be obtained from the customer care team.
Q If a new column is installed outside my house, will I be disturbed by light shining through my window?
A Modern design and technology ensures that light from the lanterns is mostly directed to the public road and footpath, however there may be a small amount of backward light
Q Who can I speak to if I have a problem with a new column location?

Q Can I express my views on the street lighting installation service?
A Yes, a questionnaire will be delivered to your house, which will enable you to make comments. All completed questionnaires will be evaluated with a view to improving the service to the public.
