LED streetlighting upgrade

We’re supporting the delivery of a £9 million programme to upgrade 28,847 streetlights across Coventry to energy-efficient LED technology. The citywide project began in November 2025 and is expected to take approximately two years to complete.

Here’s everything you need to know while the work is underway:

  • Old streetlight lanterns will be replaced with modern, energy-efficient LED lanterns specifically designed for your street
  • Works began in November 2025, starting at St Michaels ward and working outwards
  • Ward lists are based on the existing ward boundaries at the start of the programme
  • Heritage lanterns or lanterns already upgraded to LED are excluded from this project

What to expect:

  • Most of the work will be performed during daytime hours, with certain tasks scheduled for early morning. Each lantern requires up to 30 minutes to upgrade
  • After installation, the new LED lanterns will be illuminated briefly during the day for testing purposes
  • Residents living on roads where work is taking place may experience minor disruption for a short period, however all efforts will be made to ensure that any disruption is kept to a minimum. When undertaking work on a main road, it may be necessary to temporarily close a lane. In such cases, appropriate, road signs will be in place to notify the public.
  • There may be occasions where an entire street cannot be completed during a single visit due to limited lantern availability. The outstanding installations will be given priority for completion.

Why it matters:

  • Lower energy consumption
  • Reduced carbon emissions – equivalent to removing 268 cars off the road
  • Longer-lasting lights and less maintenance – LED lights last up to four times longer than the current lanterns, providing savings of £1.7m over 10 years.

Impact on your property:

  • Street lighting is designed to illuminate public highways, not private drives or gardens
  • An LED trial was successfully carried out in the Hillfields area, receiving positive feedback from residents
  • Lanterns will initially be set at full brightness and then adjusted to agreed dimmed levels within seven working days (or nine calendar days)
  • Glare shields that were previously installed may no longer be necessary as the improved lantern design reduces wasted light
  • It is normal for eyes to adapt to the new whiter light over a few weeks. We ask residents to wait two weeks before deciding whether to contact us about any concerns. If problems with glare continue two weeks following the LED upgrade, please contact our team via email at: enquiries@lightingcoventry.com

Please note:

Some streets aren’t fully included in this LED upgrade because:

  • Certain lanterns were upgraded in previous projects.
  • Some lanterns are scheduled for future upgrades.
  • Heritage lanterns are excluded for now but may be upgraded in the future if appropriate.

If you notice any outages on your street ahead of the scheduled upgrade for your ward, please report the faults here.
